Gotfredo Thaler was a Brazilian woodcarver born on February 1, 1940, in Dreizehnlinden. He learned the craft from his father, Andrä Thaler, and started carving Christ figures from Araucaria knots during his school years. In 1967, he moved to Austria for further training. After returning to his hometown, he created life-size sculptures. His most renowned work is an eight-meter high crucifix carved from a single cedar block, featuring a 4.3-meter tall Christ figure, displayed at the Cathedral in Santuário Dom Bosco, Brasília, during the National Church Congress.
