Walters played rugby union for clubs such as Llanelli, Carmarthen, and Swansea RFC, primarily as a Centre. In rugby league, he represented Wales and played at the club level for Hull FC, Wakefield Trinity, and Cardiff City Blue Dragons, also as a centre. In addition to his sports career, he served as a member of the Welsh Guards and the British Army.
