He is co-founder and former executive director of the non-profit Central Asia Institute and established the Pennies for Peace charity for education. In 2012, he paid $1 million to Montana's highest financial oversight office following an investigation, though no wrongdoing was found. Mortenson co-authored the bestseller 'Three Cups of Tea,' which remained on the New York Times bestseller list for 220 weeks and was published in 47 languages. He is also the author of 'Stones into Schools.'
