He earned his BA from the University of Louisville and a PhD in chemistry from Caltech. His academic career included roles as assistant, associate, and full professor at Pennsylvania State University and held administrative positions including department head and dean. He was also provost at the University of Maryland before becoming president at Iowa State and later chairing the board at Ashford University.
