He was a member of the now-defunct Mexican Democratic Party (PDM) and served in the Chamber of Deputies after being elected in 1979. Magaña ran for the presidency in 1988, where he faced prominent candidates such as Carlos Salinas and Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas but secured only 1.04% of the votes. His party lost its registration, and he retired from politics, passing away on April 16, 2013.
