Virgil Ivan 'Gus' Grissom was a pioneering astronaut with NASA and a member of the Mercury Seven. He served as a pilot and test pilot in the U.S. Air Force, achieving the rank of lieutenant colonel and was also a mechanical engineer. Grissom was the second American to fly in space and the first to do so twice. He participated in Mercury-Redstone 4 and Gemini 3 missions. Tragically, he died in a fire aboard the Apollo 1 spacecraft on January 27, 1967.
