He has won five medals with the Ethiopian team at the Cross Country World Championships, including bronze in 1996 and 1997, and silver in 1998, 1999, and 2002. His best individual finish was ninth place in 1999. At the Pan African Games, he won silver in 1995 in both 5000m and 10,000m, and bronze in the 10,000m in 1999. He later transitioned to marathon running, achieving notable finishes in several marathons.
