Hadassah Spira Epstein, professionally known as Hadassah, was an American dancer, choreographer, and instructor born in Jerusalem in 1909. She specialized in Indian, Javanese, Balinese, and Jewish dance. A pioneer in Indian and Israeli dance in the U.S., her works showcased ethnic and folk cultures intertwined with her spiritual beliefs. Her notable dance, "Shuvi Nafshi," premiered in 1947. Epstein began her career in New York City in 1938, debuted as a solo artist in 1945, and ran her own dance company starting in 1950, influencing many students and contributing to the New Dance Group.
