Born in Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture, his birth name was Kazuo Matsuo. He graduated from Ryukoku University, where he studied Buddhist history, and later became a lecturer at Kurume Institute of Technology. Endo also served as the head priest of Choutoku-ji in Fukuoka. He contributed significantly to the understanding and teaching of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism.
