Commander Hamilton McWhorter III (1921-2008) was a distinguished United States Navy aviator and a flying ace during World War II, credited with shooting down twelve Japanese aircraft. He was the first Hellcat ace and an exemplary pilot who participated in 89 combat missions. After the war, he commanded VF-12 and retired as the executive officer of Naval Air Station Miramar in 1969. McWhorter was later awarded the American Fighter Aces Congressional Gold Medal posthumously in 2014. He authored a memoir, The First Hellcat Ace, detailing his remarkable experiences.
