After obtaining his commercial pilot's license in 1999, he found it difficult to secure a job as a pilot. Selected by Osama bin Laden for the September 11 attacks, Hanjour hijacked Flight 77, resulting in the deaths of 64 passengers and 125 people in the Pentagon.
