Hans Martin Plüschke was a former officer of the Federal Border Guard (BGS) whose murder in 1998 attracted nationwide attention in Germany. In 1962, he shot Rudi Arnstadt, a captain of the East German border troops, during an incident at the inner-German border. While West German authorities concluded that Plüschke acted in self-defense and kept his identity secret, the East German state propaganda portrayed Arnstadt as a martyr. After the reunification of Germany, Plüschke revealed his identity in 1993 and 1997. He was found murdered on March 15, 1998, near where Arnstadt had died.
