Van Zijl worked as a newsreader at the Radionieuwsdienst ANP from the early 1970s until the late 1980s before focusing on his own media company. He faced significant mobility challenges throughout his life due to polio, relying on a wheelchair later on. He passed away on April 5, 1998, at 57 due to heart failure.
