Aschenwald participated in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, where he finished 24th in the individual event and earned a bronze medal in the team event alongside Günther Csar and Klaus Sulzenbacher. He also placed 30th overall in the Nordic Combined World Cup during the 1990/91 and 1992/93 seasons.
