Harald Herborg Nielsen was an American physicist born on January 25, 1903, in Menominee, Michigan. After earning his PhD in physics in 1929, he spent a year with Niels Bohr in Copenhagen. He joined the Ohio State University in 1930 and became a professor in 1943, leading the physics faculty from 1946 to 1967. Nielsen was recognized for his work on infrared molecular spectra and high-resolution spectrographs, and served as editor of the Journal of Molecular Spectroscopy. He received several honors, including being a Fellow of the American Physical Society and was knighted in Belgium and Denmark.
