He served as the deputy head of the Bornholmer Straße border crossing in East Berlin. On November 9, 1989, he defied orders and halted border controls at the Bornholmer Straße crossing, an act that effectively opened the Berlin Wall. Jäger is regarded as a significant figure in the events leading to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
