Harald Karsten (also Max Karsten) was a German-born sculptor who became a resident of Jyväskylä, Finland. He was educated as a typesetter and moved to Jyväskylä in 1973. Initially, he was self-taught in sculpture and worked on his art mainly during weekends. In 1980, he moved to Saarijärvi and developed an interest in sculpture, eventually becoming a full-time artist in the late 1980s. He returned to Jyväskylä in 1995, and many of his works feature movable components.
