John Hardie Ratcliffe was an English musician and served as the General Secretary of the United Kingdom Musicians' Union from 1948. Born in Liverpool in 1906, he initially performed with theatre orchestras and played saxophone and flute. In 1937, he transitioned to full-time union administration, founding several branches. Despite contemplating resignation in 1962, he remained General Secretary until 1971. Ratcliffe was featured on the BBC Radio program 'Desert Island Discs' in 1964 and passed away in 1975.
