Harishankar Brahma is the first Assamese to hold the position of Chief Election Commissioner in India. Born on April 19, 1950, he retired from the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1975 after serving in the Andhra Pradesh cadre. Brahma took retirement as Secretary of the Ministry of Power in April 2011. He served as the Chief Election Commissioner from January 16, 2015, to April 18, 2015, becoming the second person appointed from the Northeast for this position, following J. M. Lyngdoh.
