He served as an Air Marshal and was the Air Member for Personnel from 1973 to 1974, playing a key role in the Air Force Board of the Ministry of Defence. During World War II, he was a pilot with No. 617 Squadron, known as the Dam Busters, and was instrumental in the destruction of the Möhnetalsperre during Operation Chastise, for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order.
