Harold O. Messerschmidt was a United States Army soldier awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism during World War II. He joined the Army in 1943 and served as a Sergeant in the 30th Infantry Regiment. On September 17, 1944, during a German attack in France, he displayed extraordinary bravery, leading his men until all were either killed or wounded. Despite sustaining wounds himself, he continued to fight until he was killed. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor on July 17, 1946.
