He is a Nobel Prize laureate in Physiology or Medicine for 2020, noted for his work that led to the discovery of the hepatitis C virus. He serves as the head of the infectious diseases division and associate director of research at the Blood Transfusion Medicine Unit at the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland. In the mid-1970s, Alter's team demonstrated that many blood transfusion-related hepatitis cases were not caused by known hepatitis viruses, leading to the identification of the new hepatitis C virus.
