Whittemore founded the Whittemore Peterson Institute to study chronic fatigue syndrome, motivated by his daughter's illness, although the institute's claims faced scrutiny. He was also involved in the controversial Coyote Springs land development project, which required legislative support from Senator Harry Reid.
