Hayao Kawai was a prominent Japanese psychologist, recognized as a leading authority in analytical psychology and the founder of Japanese Jungianism. Born on June 23, 1928, in Taki, Hyōgo, he was also the first in Japan to adopt the sandplay therapy concept developed by Dora Kalff. Kawai authored numerous works, often in the form of dialogues, engaging with themes related to Japanese Buddhism, particularly alongside scholar Tanikawa Shuntarō. He participated in Eranos starting in 1982 and served as director of the International Research Center for Japanese Studies from 1995 to 2001.
