Hector G. Godinez (1924-1999) was a prominent civil rights leader and the first Mexican-American postmaster in the U.S., appointed by President Kennedy in 1961. As Southern California district manager, he oversaw over 44,000 employees. A WWII veteran, he served as a tank commander and was decorated for bravery. Godinez co-founded the League of Latin American Citizens, fighting against discrimination and playing a pivotal role in the Mendez v. Westminster case, which desegregated schools in California six years before the national level decision in Brown v. Board of Education.
