He emigrated to the United States in 1948 to study philosophy under Wilfrid Sellars at the University of Minnesota, obtaining his B.A. in 1950 and M.A. in 1952. He earned his Ph.D. in June 1954 with his dissertation 'The Logical Structure of Moral Reasoning.' He is known for his works in deontic logic, perception, cognition, and the theory of experience, as well as for founding the journal Noûs. He passed away due to a brain tumor on September 7, 1991.
