Heidi was a female Virginia opossum born in North Carolina around May 2008 and later became a global media phenomenon. Known for her pronounced strabismus, she lived in Leipzig Zoo from May 2010 until her death in September 2011. Initially not publicly displayed, she gained fame after a photo was published in December 2010. Heidi struggled with obesity and arthritis, and despite efforts to improve her condition, she was euthanized on September 28, 2011, after her health worsened.
