Mäkinen completed her doctorate in 2008 on measures of rheumatoid arthritis activity and criteria for remission. She has published novels, including her debut in 2016, and has written children's books, with her first released in 2023. Mäkinen has been blogging since 2008 and is a mother of two adult children.
