Helen Octavia Dickens was an American physician and professor specializing in obstetrics and gynecology. She made history as the first African American woman to earn board certification in these fields. In addition, she was the first African American woman to gain membership in the American College of Surgeons. Dickens significantly advanced the representation of African American women in medicine and contributed to the healthcare profession until her passing in 2001.
