Helmut Wimmer was a notable painter who worked as the staff artist for New York's Hayden Planetarium from 1954 to 1987. He created impressive depictions of cosmic vistas for planetarium shows. Born in Munich in 1925, he was an apprentice to a sculptor before being captured during WWII. Wimmer illustrated many astronomy books and his renowned works included a famous 1971 illustration for Physics Today that depicted black holes. His painting for Weather Report's album 'Mysterious Traveller' further showcased his artistic talents. He also designed an educational board game for children about space.
