Hendrik Johannes van den Broek was a Dutch journalist born on March 10, 1901, in Rotterdam. He worked as a correspondent in Paris for De Maasbode and later for the Telegraaf. During World War II, after the German invasion, he founded Radio Vrij Nederland to boost morale. He fled to London after the French capitulation and broadcasted for Dutch sailors using the pseudonym De Rotterdammer. He later became head of Radio Oranje and wrote about his wartime experiences in 'Hier Radio Oranje'. Post-war, he was the director of Radio Nederland Wereldomroep.
