He is renowned for writing in both Dutch and Sranan Tongo, and is considered the most significant and influential poet in this Creole language. His most famous literary work is the Sranan Tongo stanza of the Surinamese anthem. De Ziel's poetry often depicts the natural beauty of Suriname, serving as a source of peace for a restless soul.
