Herbert Augustus Blaize was a Grenadian politician born on February 24, 1918, in Carriacou. He worked in Aruba's oil refinery for many years before founding the Grenada National Party in 1953. Blaize served as Minister of Trade and Supply and later became Chief Minister of Grenada, holding office intermittently until 1967. After a strategic alliance with the New Jewel Movement, he returned to politics post-1983 U.S. invasion, becoming Prime Minister and adopting a tough economic policy. He passed away on December 19, 1989, shortly after being elected leader of his party.
