Heribert Smolinsky (1940-2012) was a German Catholic priest and professor of Medieval and Modern Church History. He initially trained as a banker before obtaining his Abitur and studying Catholic theology. He earned his doctorate in 1973 and was ordained a priest in 1974. He held various academic positions, including at Würzburg and Bochum, and later moved to Freiburg. He focused his research on Reformation history and was a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences. He declined an offer from Tübingen in 1995.
