Herre Halbertsma was a Frisian historian and archaeologist born on July 9, 1920, in Snits. He studied history in Groningen with a focus on archeological soil research. He worked with A.E. van Giffen before joining the Rijksdienst voor het Oudheidkundig Bodemonderzoek in 1947. Notable for his involvement in church restorations and numerous archaeological excavations, he gained recognition especially for excavating churches like St. Bonifatius and St. Maarten. He authored several articles on his research and was awarded the Joost Hiddes Halbertsma Prize in 1958 for contributions to Frisian history.
