Yechezkel 'Hezi' Eshel (1931-2016) was a lieutenant colonel in the Israel Defense Forces, where he held command positions in the Givati and Golani brigades. Born in Baghdad, he immigrated to Israel in 1936 and joined the Haganah at 16. Eshel participated in critical operations during the 1947–1949 Palestine war and later held various roles, including chief of training and leader of the Lakhish District. He retired in 1980 and was married to Edna, with whom he had four children, including Air Force commander Amir Eshel.
