Shida worked in editorial departments at various children's publishing companies including Shogakukan and Seibundō Shinkōsha. He contributed significantly to the field of children's literature throughout his career, and in 1973 he was recognized as a Children's Cultural Contributor by the Japan Children's Literature Association. He also published under the pseudonyms Jūchi Ishigami and Hisashi Saitō.
