He was a key figure in the Japanese Communist Party, previously holding roles such as a permanent member of the Central Committee and Chairman of the Policy Commission. After leaving the party, he stepped away from political activities and has been involved with an NPO organization, serving as chairman of the NPO Bōkyō no Tō in Naze, Hokkaido.
