Kusaka began playing basketball in elementary school, went on to excel in high school, and later played for Nihon University, contributing to their success. He was drafted by the Sendai 89ERS in 2005 and later played for the Kyoto Hannaryz after a brief loan period. After retiring in 2017, he transitioned to coaching.
