Hikonyan is a mascot created by the Hikone city government in Japan in 2007 to celebrate Hikone Castle's 400th anniversary. Based on a legend involving a white cat and Ii Naotaka, the 3rd Lord of Hikone, Hikonyan features a samurai helmet inspired by the Ii family. The character has significantly boosted tourism in Hikone, with an increase of over 200,000 visitors annually and significant economic impact estimated at 33.8 billion yen (approximately US$425 million). Merchandise sales also soared, amounting to about 1.7 billion yen (US$21 million) as of 2008.
