He began his strength sports career in 1983, representing Iceland as a junior powerlifter. Hjalti coached renowned strongman Jón Páll Sigmarsson and participated in team competitions alongside Magnús Ver Magnússon in 1989 and 1990. His nickname, 'The Great Ursus,' reflects his formidable presence in the world of strength athletics.
