Hoài Thanh (1909–1982), born Nguyễn Đức Nguyên, was a prominent Vietnamese literary critic and theorist instrumental in asserting Modern Poetry in 20th-century Vietnamese literature. Born in Nghệ An, he was involved in anti-colonial movements and later became a key figure in literary criticism. Co-authoring 'Thi nhân Việt Nam' established his reputation as a leading critic. After 1945, he held various prominent academic and cultural positions including at Hanoi University and the Vietnam Writers' Association. A member of the Communist Party, he passed away in Hanoi at the age of 73.
