Herbert Holden Thorp is an American chemist, professor, and entrepreneur, born on August 16, 1964. He served as the tenth chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, known for being one of the youngest university leaders in the U.S. He faced allegations of academic fraud in 2012, leading to his resignation in 2013. Subsequently, he became provost at Washington University in St. Louis until 2019. He was named editor-in-chief of Science magazine in 2019 and continues to be a distinguished professor at Washington University and a professor of chemistry at George Washington University.
