Horace Gilbert Smithy Jr. was an American heart surgeon born on July 19, 1914, who performed the first successful mitral valve repair in 1948. His groundbreaking work preceded the widespread adoption of cardiopulmonary bypass and open-heart surgery. Although his procedures didn't completely resolve heart valve disease, he introduced novocaine injection techniques to prevent cardiac arrhythmias during surgery. Smithy, affected by his own aortic stenosis, tragically passed away shortly after his first successful valve repair, unable to persuade others to operate on him.
