Hörður Áskelsson is an Icelandic organist and choir director born on July 19, 1953, in Akureyri. He studied music in Akureyri and Reykjavík before furthering his education at the Robert Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf. He served as an organist in Düsseldorf before returning to Iceland, where he became the organist and cantor at Hallgrímskirkja from 1982 to 2021. He founded a festival for sacred music and established the chamber choir Schola cantorum Reykjavicensis. He also teaches organ and choral conducting and has received several prestigious awards in his field.
