Horst Gienke was a German bishop born on April 18, 1930, in Schwerin and passed away on February 26, 2021, in Demmin. He served as the bishop of the Evangelical Church of Greifswald from 1972 to 1989 and was the chairman of the Council of the Evangelical Church of the Union (EKU) in East Germany from 1973 to 1976 and again from 1987 to 1989. Following his resignation in 1989, due to a vote of no confidence, it was revealed that he was registered as an unofficial collaborator of the East German State Security.
