Zimmer completed his doctorate in 1966 at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen under Peter Roquette. He was a professor at the University of Saarland until his retirement in 2002. His research included the arithmetic of elliptic and hyperelliptic curves with applications in cryptography, and he contributed to the development of the SIMATH computer algebra system for number-theoretic applications.
