He earned his doctoral degree in 1968 with a focus on youth tourism's educational challenges. He served as a professor at the University of Hamburg from 1975 to 2006 and founded a research institute on leisure studies. Opaschowski has influenced future studies in Germany and received numerous awards, including the Federal Cross of Merit. He co-founded the Opaschowski Institute for Future Research in 2014 and has published extensively on societal and future-oriented themes.
