He is best known for being a close associate of Martin Luther King Jr. and a key figure in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Williams was instrumental in organizing peaceful protests against racial, political, economic, and social oppression. He was also the founding president of Hosea Feed the Hungry and Homeless, one of North America's largest social service organizations. His famous motto was 'unbought and unbossed.'
