Houzan Mahmoud, born in Iraq in 1973, is a political activist against war and a women's rights advocate in Iraqi Kurdistan. She was the main speaker at an anti-war conference in London in 2003 and is a founding member of the Iraqi Women's Rights Coalition. Houzan led an international campaign against Sharia law and the oppression of women in Iraq. Her articles have been published in several major international newspapers, including The Guardian and The Independent, and she has been featured on numerous global television networks such as CNN, NBC, Sky News, and BBC.
